# Free Video Editors Without a Watermark, Compared (2026)

**TLDR:** Free video editors without a watermark fall into two groups. Desktop apps such as DaVinci Resolve, Shotcut, Kdenlive, OpenShot and iMovie never stamp anything on your export. Browser editors are where the catch lives: Kapwing and VEED watermark every free export, while CapCut, Clipchamp and Canva stay clean only until you touch a template, effect or asset marked as paid. [VidStudio](/video-editor) runs in the browser, uploads nothing and has no watermark at any resolution, because there is no server cost to recover. Pick by where you need to edit and what you need to do, then check the watermark line last.

## The watermark is a business model, not a feature

A watermark on a free export is an advert that the software pays itself with. Whether an editor adds one tells you how it makes money, and that is a better guide than any feature list.

Desktop editors that are open source, or that a hardware company gives away, have nothing to upsell on the export button. Blackmagic sells cameras and the paid Studio edition of Resolve. Shotcut, Kdenlive and OpenShot are volunteer projects. Apple ships iMovie to sell Macs. None of them watermark, and none of them ever will, because the watermark would not pay for anything.

Cloud editors are different. Every upload costs bandwidth, every project costs storage and every render costs server time. A free plan has to be paid for somehow, so it is either a watermark, a short export limit, a low resolution, or a set of premium assets that quietly switch the watermark on. Most of the editors people search for by name are in this group.

There is a third group, small but growing: editors that run inside the browser tab and never upload the file. VidStudio is one. With no server doing the rendering there is no per-user cost to recover, which is why it has no watermark, no account and no export cap. The trade is that your own laptop does the work.

## Eleven editors, side by side

| Editor | Runs on | Free export | Watermark on the free tier | The catch |
| --------------- | -------------------- | --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| VidStudio | Browser, no upload | Up to 4K | Never | Your device renders. Long 4K timelines are slow on old laptops. |
| DaVinci Resolve | Windows, Mac, Linux | Up to Ultra HD 3840 by 2160 | Never | Large install, steep learning curve, some codecs and AI tools are Studio only. |
| Shotcut | Windows, Mac, Linux | Any | Never | Dated interface, the occasional crash on long projects. |
| Kdenlive | Windows, Mac, Linux | Any | Never | Mac builds lag behind Linux, proxies need setting up for 4K. |
| OpenShot | Windows, Mac, Linux | Any | Never | Slows down badly on long timelines. |
| iMovie | Mac, iPhone, iPad | Up to 4K | Never | Apple devices only, two video tracks. |
| CapCut | Desktop, mobile, web | 1080p | Only when a template or effect marked Pro is used | More features moved behind the paywall in 2025, and the terms grant a licence over uploads. |
| Clipchamp | Web, Windows | 1080p | Only when a premium feature is used | 4K needs a Microsoft 365 subscription. |
| Canva | Web, desktop, mobile | 1080p MP4 | Only when a Pro element is used | Easy to drop a paid clip or track in by accident. |
| Kapwing | Web | 720p, short clips | Every free export | Upgrading is the only way to remove it. |
| VEED | Web | 720p | Every free export | The free plan is a demo of the paid one. |

## The ones that never watermark

### DaVinci Resolve

The free version of Resolve is the most capable free editor that exists, by a distance. Colour grading, multicam, the Fairlight audio page and Fusion effects are all included, exports go up to Ultra HD and there is no time limit. What the paid Studio edition adds is mostly for professionals: the neural engine tools, advanced noise reduction, some ten bit codecs and frame rates above sixty. The cost is the learning curve and the hardware. It wants a real graphics card and a few evenings of tutorials before a simple cut feels simple.

### Shotcut, Kdenlive and OpenShot

Three open source editors, all free of charge, all without a watermark, all cross platform. Shotcut is the most reliable of the three for format support because it sits on top of FFmpeg and opens almost anything. Kdenlive has the most complete timeline and the best keyboard driven workflow, but it is a Linux project first and the Mac build trails behind. OpenShot is the easiest to pick up and the first to struggle once a project has more than a few dozen clips. If you want a desktop editor and Resolve feels like too much, start with Shotcut.

### iMovie

If you own a Mac, iPhone or iPad you already have a watermark free editor with 4K export. iMovie is limited to two video tracks and a fixed set of titles and transitions, which is enough for a holiday video or a short tutorial and not enough for anything layered. It is also Apple only, so a project does not move to a Windows machine.

### VidStudio

The browser option that does not upload. Drop a file onto the page and the editor reads it in place, so nothing leaves your device and there is no account to create. The timeline has multiple video, audio, image and text tracks, crop and transform per clip, filters, transitions and keyframes, and export goes up to 4K as an H.264 MP4 with no watermark. The honest limits are that your laptop does the rendering, that projects live in that browser profile rather than in a cloud account, and that it is built for Chrome, Edge and a recent Safari on a desktop screen. Start on the [online video editor](/video-editor) page, or the [no sign up](/video-editor-no-signup) version if you are checking that claim specifically.

## Free until you touch something paid

### CapCut

CapCut's free plan exports 1080p without a watermark as long as the project only uses free templates and effects. Anything carrying a Pro badge brings the watermark with it, and after the 2025 restructure a lot more carries that badge than before, including captions and several AI tools that used to be free. The other thing to read before you rely on it is the terms of service, which grant CapCut a broad licence over the content you upload. We wrote up the whole situation in [CapCut alternatives that keep your content yours](/blog/capcut-alternatives-private).

### Clipchamp

Microsoft's editor exports 1080p free of a watermark, and it is built into Windows, which makes it the obvious pick for a quick cut on a work laptop. The watermark appears only if the project uses a premium feature, and 4K export is reserved for Microsoft 365 subscribers. Because it is a web app, your footage does go to Microsoft's servers to be processed.

### Canva

Canva exports an MP4 from a free account without a watermark as long as every element in the design is free. The catch is practical rather than hidden: the library mixes free and Pro clips, music and images, and one paid element anywhere in the project is enough to watermark the whole export. Check each asset before you render.

## The ones that always watermark

Kapwing's own help page is clear: every export made on the free plan carries a watermark in the bottom right corner, and the only way to remove it is to upgrade. VEED does the same, with free exports capped at 720p and carrying VEED branding. Neither is a bad editor. Kapwing in particular has strong collaboration and subtitle tools. But if the search that brought you here was "free video editor without watermark", these two are not the answer, whatever their landing pages say.

## Three checks before you trust any free tier

1. Export a ten second test before you edit anything real. A watermark that appears on the test costs you ten seconds, not an afternoon.
2. Look for a Pro, Premium or crown badge on every template, effect, font and audio track you use. In CapCut, Clipchamp and Canva, that badge is the watermark switch.
3. Read the pricing page for the word "watermark". If the free column does not say "no watermark" in plain words, assume there is one.

## Which one to pick

For a serious desktop editor that will never ask you for money, DaVinci Resolve, with Shotcut as the lighter alternative. For a quick cut on a Mac, iMovie. For a quick cut on Windows, Clipchamp, as long as the footage can go to a server. For a quick cut of footage that should not go to a server, or when you do not want another account, VidStudio in the browser. For template driven social clips, CapCut, with an eye on the Pro badges and the terms. And if the tool you are already using is Kapwing or VEED, the watermark is the price of the free plan and no setting removes it.
