Video Resize Dimensions for Social Media

Every platform has its own recommended video size. Using the wrong dimensions can lead to unexpected cropping, black bars, or reduced quality in the feed. Here are the most common specs you should know.

YouTube

1920 x 1080 (16:9)

The standard landscape format for YouTube videos. Also supports 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 for higher resolutions.

YouTube Shorts

1080 x 1920 (9:16)

Vertical video format for YouTube's short-form content. Keep your video under 60 seconds for Shorts.

TikTok

1080 x 1920 (9:16)

Full-screen vertical format. TikTok recommends 9:16 for the best viewing experience on mobile devices.

Instagram Feed

1080 x 1080 (1:1) or 1080 x 1350 (4:5)

Square works well for carousel posts. Portrait (4:5) takes up more screen space in the feed, increasing engagement.

Instagram Stories / Reels

1080 x 1920 (9:16)

Full-screen vertical video. Leave safe zones at the top and bottom for UI overlays and captions.

Twitter / X

1920 x 1080 (16:9)

Landscape video is the default. Twitter also supports 1:1 and 9:16, but 16:9 gets the most real estate in the timeline.

LinkedIn

1920 x 1080 (16:9)

Professional landscape format. LinkedIn supports videos up to 10 minutes for native uploads.

Resize, Letterbox, or Crop: What's the Difference?

Resize

Scales the entire video frame to new dimensions. If the target aspect ratio differs from the original and "Maintain aspect ratio" is enabled, the video is scaled to fit within the target size. If disabled, the video is stretched to fill the exact dimensions, which may distort the image.

Letterbox

Places your video inside a target frame while preserving the original aspect ratio. Padding bars (black by default, or any color you choose) fill the remaining space. This is the safest option when you need to match exact platform dimensions without losing any part of the video.

Crop

Cuts away the edges of the video to fit the target dimensions. No scaling is applied to the remaining content, so quality is preserved, but parts of the frame are removed. Use the X/Y offset controls to choose which region of the video to keep.

Resize MP4, MOV, AVI & More Video Formats

VidStudio supports a wide range of video formats for both input and output. You can upload files in MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, FLV, and many other container formats recognized by FFmpeg. All processed videos are exported as MP4 with H.264 video encoding, which provides excellent compatibility across every major platform, browser, and device. H.264 is the most widely supported codec on the web, ensuring your resized videos play smoothly on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and any other destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will resizing reduce my video quality?

Resizing to a smaller resolution naturally reduces detail, but VidStudio re-encodes with high-quality settings to minimize visible artifacts. Scaling up beyond the original resolution may produce a softer image because new pixels must be interpolated. For the best results, always start with the highest-quality source you have and resize downward.

What's the difference between resizing and cropping?

Resizing scales the entire frame to new dimensions, while cropping removes pixels from the edges to match the target size. Resizing keeps the full image but changes its scale; cropping keeps the original scale but shows a smaller portion of the image.

How do I resize a video for Instagram?

Use the Presets tab and select the Instagram Square (1080x1080) option for feed posts, or use the TikTok/Reels preset (1080x1920) for Stories and Reels. For the 4:5 portrait format (1080x1350), switch to Letterbox or Resize mode and enter the dimensions manually.

What video formats are supported?

VidStudio accepts MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, FLV, and most other common video formats as input. All output files are exported as MP4 with H.264 encoding, which works on virtually every platform and device.

Can I change the aspect ratio without stretching?

Yes. Use the Letterbox mode to add padding bars and preserve the original aspect ratio, or use Crop mode to trim the edges and fill the new frame. Both approaches keep your footage looking natural without any distortion.

Do I need to create an account?

No. VidStudio is completely free and requires no account or registration. Your videos are processed in your browser, so there is nothing to sign up for.

How do I resize a video without losing quality?

Upload your video to VidStudio, choose your target dimensions or a social media preset, and click Process Video. VidStudio uses high-quality H.264 encoding to minimize quality loss during resizing. For best results, always resize down from a high-resolution source rather than scaling up.

How do I resize an MP4 video?

Drop the MP4 onto the uploader, choose a target preset or enter custom width and height, and click Process Video. The output is also an MP4 with H.264 encoding, which plays everywhere. VidStudio also accepts MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, and most other common formats as input.

How long does it take to resize a video?

A typical 1-minute 1080p clip takes 20 to 60 seconds depending on your device. Resizing is faster than compression because it does not need a two-pass encode. Longer or higher-resolution videos take proportionally longer. Everything runs on your device, so internet speed does not factor in.

Can I resize a video from my phone?

Yes. VidStudio runs in any modern mobile browser including Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android. Tap the upload area, pick a video from your camera roll, and the rest of the workflow is the same as on desktop. Phone CPUs are slower than laptops, so expect longer processing times for very high-resolution files.

Why does my video look cropped or stretched after resizing?

If the target dimensions have a different aspect ratio than the source, scaling without protection will stretch the image. Use Letterbox mode to fit the full frame with padding bars, or Crop mode to fill the new frame by trimming the edges. Avoid plain Resize when the aspect ratio changes unless you want the stretched look on purpose.

Is there a file size limit for resizing?

No fixed limit. Because the encode runs locally, the practical ceiling is the memory on your device. Most modern laptops handle videos up to several gigabytes without issue. Phones can struggle with very large 4K files because of memory pressure inside the browser tab.

Common Resize Tasks

Resize horizontal video to vertical

Convert a 16:9 landscape recording to 9:16 for TikTok, Reels, or Shorts. Letterbox keeps the entire frame visible with padding bars, which is the safest choice when text or graphics live near the edges of the source. Crop fills the vertical frame edge-to-edge, which works best when the subject is centered.

Resize a 4K video to 1080p

Pick Resize mode with target 1920x1080 and the aspect ratio toggle on. The output stays pixel-perfect 16:9 with no padding or cropping. This is the most common downscale because most upload destinations cap practical playback at 1080p anyway, and the resulting file is much smaller.

Square crop for Instagram feed

Use the Instagram Post preset for 1080x1080. Crop mode lets you pick which part of a horizontal source ends up in the square. This is faster than re-shooting and avoids the soft look you get when Instagram crops the video itself on upload.

Custom dimensions for a website embed

Switch to Resize mode and type the exact width and height your site layout needs. Keep the aspect ratio toggle on to avoid stretching. Pair this with compression on /compress and Web Streaming enabled so the embed loads instantly.
